The salt mine in Wieliczka is located near Kraków. This is a must-see for all tourists who come to this picturesque city of Lesser Poland. Together with the salt mine in Bochnia, it was a part of the Cracow Saltworks from the 13^th until the 18^th century. The salt extracted from these salt mines dates back to the Miocene period.

In 1976 the mine was included in the national register of monuments, and two years later inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The place has been repeatedly titled and awarded, among others, in 2007, it was acknowledged as one of the seven wonders of Poland. Most of the visitors are foreigners. According to the statistics from 2006, their number accounted for 58% of tourists. The most of them were British and Germans.

Numerous events are organized in the underground. The renovation works consumed a lot of money but allowed to secure 20 chambers and 1.5 km of pavements.
